“I’m not sure I can still be friends with you,” Bella said, as Kylie stood at her friend’s front door, not even being invited in. Bella looked dejected as if all the air had been puffed out of her. “My mom thinks you’re a bad influence.”
“How can you say that?” Kylie said, suddenly feeling as if the ground was shaking. “We’ve been friends since high school.”
“I know, but it’s not just this. It’s other stuff, too. I never told you, but my mom hasn’t wanted me to be friends with you for a long time.”
“Your mom? Since when do you care what your mom thinks?” Kylie felt heat rise in her cheeks.
“She’s my mom, and I live here, and, look… I feel bad, but since I’ve been at the law firm, I’ve decided I want to study to be a lawyer. And it wouldn’t look good, would it?”
Kylie felt the burn in her cheeks catch fire. Her voice trembled as she spoke.
“What wouldn’t look good? Do you mean being friends with me? Is that what you’re saying? Really? Really Bella?”
“I don’t want to talk about it now. I have to go. I’m sorry.”
Bella went to close the door, but Kylie moved her foot quickly, jamming it in the gap between the door and the frame.
“We’re not friends anymore because of something that isn’t my fault? How can you? That’s just the bitchiest thing you’ve ever done. That’s just—”
Bella pushed against the door. Kylie felt the pressure against her foot. It actually hurt.
“Kylie, maybe when it’s over, I’ll call you. Maybe then—”
Kylie reached around the door, holding the edge of it to keep it open, while pulling back her foot.
“You know what, Bella? I don’t need you as a friend. I couldn’t care less. Don’t bother calling. I’ve got plenty of other friends. Maybe you and Andrew can get together. You’re both psychos.”
Then Kylie pulled the door hard as she could, slamming it the remaining few inches.
“See-ya, bitch,” she said, flipping her middle finger at the now closed door before taking off toward the road.
She was shaking, and her legs felt weak and her mouth dry. The burn in her cheeks had travelled through her body and set her skin on fire. A piercing pain set in behind her eyes. Without even realizing that she was crying, she felt tears roll down her cheeks.
All she could think of was the unfairness of the world. Why was she in so much trouble, while traitors like Bella and crazies like Andrew got to keep on being assholes while she suffered?
The world was truly unfair and Kylie simply couldn’t understand why.
